Dating and Dickpics: Episode 13

13. Unlucky for some. But as someone with seemingly endless bad luck, I like to think 13 can signify some sort of change.

Well, unfortunately, there’s no change here. I was recently at work on a Wednesday morning, quite happily tapping away on my keyboard and coding paperwork, minding my own business and listening to Drake (obviously) when my phone vibrated against the cool, hard wooden desk I’d placed it on. I figured it was one of my friends trying to arrange plans for the weekend so I didn’t hesitate to open it.

It was an anonymous dickpic.

my eyes my eyes.gif

Scarred for life

I’m not entirely sure what’s worse: a dickpic from a man you know or a dickpic from a complete stranger. Both are intolerable in my eyes and both are embarrassing but perhaps more so from the stranger because they are under the false illusion that somehow, their penis is so magnificent and aesthetically pleasing that you will jump on the next tube to their place naked.

I told the dick in question that his actions were repulsive and that I was not interested. I told him the sight of his ghastly manhood made me want to vomit. He proceeded to call me a whore. Right, I’m the whore. You’re the one who sent a picture of your genitals to a stranger, but I’m the whore. I preceded to destroy his logic by telling him that clearly he’s the whore out of the two of us because he’s so desperate for sex that he’s flashing his penis to an anonymous person. He then used some colourful language and after telling him to have a quick one-two pump in his hand because that’s all he could manage, I blocked him.

Lesson? I will always call you out on your bullshit and I will always have the last word if you dare disrespect me.

Queen of Effortless Clapbacks aka me

There was another guy who decided to stumble his fuckboy-ways back into my life. He texted me after months and months of silence. His excuse? He’s ‘choleric’. In case you wondered, he’s talking about one of the Four Temperaments which have been wholeheartedly disproved. This was his oldy-worldy way of saying ‘I’m a fuckboy and I’m only messaging you because I want sex and for some reason, I think that I’m so special you’ll break two and a half years of celibacy for me’.

Any guesses on how I dealt with that?

Did I:

  • A: Express my wonder at him texting me again and partake in some polite conversation?
  • B: Make it crystal clear that I am looking for something serious, not a party in my pants?
  • C: Explain how much of a fuckboy he is, only for him to beg for another chance?
  • D: C, but sass him down and block his sorry ass?

The answer is D, because I don’t suffer fools gladly. I was a little shocked that he had bothered to text me but then again, if a fuckboy wants sex, they will magically remember the number of anyone they ever met with a pulse. I don’t think he actually remembered me. He did vaguely describe the night I met him but I really could’ve been any girl he met in any bar in London. He was horny and desperate. I am neither of the two and I have exacting standards.

dfwm

I’ll call you out if you’re a fuckboy

Remember how earlier on I was talking about how 13 is unlucky for some? It seems that this installment of D&D shows a change in luck, for I was recently with someone who met my exacting standards. We spent some time together and it was absolutely magical. It was, quite simply, the best weekend of my life (and I’m happy to say he also enjoyed it). He’s a good friend of mine and someone I feel extremely comfortable with. I don’t have to pretend to be someone I’m not. I don’t have to be perfect. My imperfections aren’t a big deal to him. He makes me smile uncontrollably and laugh like a complete goofball. The best bit? I managed to successfully introduce him to my real, true love, Grey’s Anatomy. It’s all very early days but I’m excited and for once, I’m happy. Long may it continue. And although I love all of my readers dearly, I hope this is the last Dating & Dickpics I have to write in a very, very long time.

cheesy

It wasn’t as cheesy as this but considering I’m a 20-something Bridget Jones, this picture seemed appropriate (note: I am cheesy)

Dating and Dickpics: Episode 12

As you can tell, my quest for love is still ongoing as we are now into our 12th episode of the tales of my tragic love life.

The past month has seen many different changes and dates. I have a new job which I’m looking forward to starting so I’ve been out and about a fair bit before I settle into the routine of the 9-5 life. I’m also writing a book! That’s the most exciting news, really. It’s going to take me a while but I’m chipping away at it every day. I’m actually shocked at the level of self-discipline I have. I mean, I’ve even held off watching Grey’s Anatomy because I dedicate my afternoons to writing, leaving evenings for watching TV.

meredith

It seems like I do have a story and it’s getting published

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the same luck in my love life. I gave a guy I dated once a second chance…and he blew it. He contacted me recently after going AWOL for a few months. I told him that yes we had chemistry, but I was still unsure about him because he just disappeared and went radio silent for months. He told me he still liked me and wanted to take me out on a date so I agreed. Everything was fine, even up until the night before. We were talking and he was saying just how much he was looking forward to seeing me the next day.

I woke up the next morning feeling positive. He hadn’t called or texted to say he couldn’t make it so the date was still happening. I picked out my outfit, got ready and headed off to the tube station to hop on the next train to King’s Cross. When I was around 10 minutes away from that tube stop, I texted him saying I was on time and I’d meet him at Covent Garden at 3.30pm like we had agreed.

Then shit hit the fan. He texted me, telling me not to ‘leave home’ when I clearly already had. He said he was still at work. I asked what time he was going to finish — if it was a couple of hours, I could easily kill time in a bar or something. No, he was going to finish at 5pm. I told him I could do some shopping and wait until he was ready, then we could just grab dinner and some drinks. He said no, that we should reschedule and he would be too tired and too moody to go on a date after work.

tumblr_m0dphhcxqz1rqfhi2o1_500

REALLY?

So let’s get this straight. He knows it takes me an hour to get to King’s Cross. He knew I would leave my house at 2.30pm. He didn’t inform me then that in fact, he couldn’t leave work at 1pm like his boss said he could. He would’ve known by 2.30pm that he was working late and couldn’t make the date. So why didn’t he inform me? I was livid. I’d wasted all that time and make up and he had actually stood me up. I’ve never been stood up in my life. I was so fuming that I was on the verge of tears (I do that annoying angry-cry thing). It was so rude, unacceptable and inconsiderate. I turned around and made my way back home. On my journey, I texted him and told him he shouldn’t dare to contact me again, that he’s a fuckboy and no, we won’t reschedule, because he’s rude and he can go to hell in a handcart. I actually wanted to let go and call him every name under the sun, but I’m too classy for that…somehow.

My mum and brother were super supportive. My brother, who is actually a really chilled out guy, said that he was appalled that I’d been stood up and that he was furious on my behalf. He also said that I should’ve joined him and his wife as they were only a few tube stops away and they would’ve gladly dished out tea and sympathy. However, I knew if I had taken them up on their generous offer, I probably would’ve burst into tears and I really just wanted to go home and get cuddles from my mum instead.

epic-hugs-friends-pikachu

My mum’s hugs are epic

I also went on a couple of dates with another guy, but that didn’t lead anywhere. Well, that was my decision really. I think that having been on so many first dates, I’ve fine-tuned my list of what I want from a guy and that means making tough decisions and not compromising on anything at all. I have high standards and people often remark that because of said high standards, I’ll probably be alone, but I’d rather be alone than settle for someone who makes me compromise on things that I really can’t compromise on. I still hold out some hope that I may find love, but it may take a lot longer than I thought. I could quite easily date someone who isn’t right for me for the sake of it, but that wouldn’t be fair to the other person. It’s better to be single and continue the search.

There is another man on the cards though. It’s all hush-hush at the moment and I won’t be spilling the tea any time soon. I don’t want to jinx it because this may actually have potential, but we’ll have to see what happens in due course.

In other news:

  • I’ve already started writing my book. It’s going pretty well, if I do say so myself.
  • I’m having a mini-staycation back in Exeter at the end of November (and if any of you are still there, hit me up so we can arrange something). I cannot wait to go back and rediscover my love for that place.
  • Unfortunately, there was a huge fire in Exeter which means I won’t be visiting one of my favourite places there because it’s been burnt down to a cinder. At least I’ll always have the memories.
  • Reminiscing about Exeter has made me realise just how hard it is to get decent cider in London. I’ll be drinking a lot of cider that weekend.
  • I’m working on Halloween so I can’t celebrate it, but I came to the conclusion that if I was celebrating, I’d have dressed up as The Joker.

Carousel

Sadly, another season of Grey’s Anatomy has finished. However, this gives us the chance to speculate for months on end, which is precisely what I’m going to do.

Recap

Initially, I was completely against Nathan. Owen didn’t like him and that was reason enough for me to hate him, mostly because Owen has proven himself to be a lovely guy (except for when he told Cristina that she ‘killed their baby’ and cheated on her). And when we discovered that he had been in a relationship with Owen’s sister, Megan, that was the final nail in the coffin. Owen isn’t without his portion of the blame for what happened to Megan, but it’s always easier to blame someone else. Anyway, Nathan was a no-no.

martin1

But when Nathan and Meredith were talking in the car park and things were getting heated, I knew then that they should probably end up together. There’s undeniable chemistry between them. They get each other. They’ve both loved and lost. It makes sense. In Family Affair, the season finale, they share memories of their loved ones and it just seems like they could have a great relationship. I am however wary given Nathan’s track record of cheating.

Then there’s Maggie. I honestly want the best for her. She hasn’t had it easy, what with discovering that she’s the love child of Ellis Grey and Richard Webber. Then DeLuca couldn’t handle her P-O-W-E-R. She deserves happiness because she is the most optimistic character the show has ever seen. But she’s misguided. It’s quite obvious that Nathan harbours no romantic feelings for his boss. She’s seeing what she wants to see; it’s quite obvious to us as viewers that there’s no connection there (other than the box of bacon).

greys-anatomy-season-12-spoilers

We can’t talk about Meredith without talking about Alex. I absolutely adored their moment on the grass together, awaiting Amelia’s wedding. It was a Cristina/Meredith flashback. I honestly believe that Alex and Meredith are each other’s people. It was a heartwarming moment.

I honestly feel like Jo should’ve been honest with Alex. She managed to tell DeLuca but couldn’t tell the love of her life? Of course Alex will go crazy when he finds out, but that’s who he is. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Now, he thinks the worst of her. This could’ve all been prevented if she had just told him the truth about why she couldn’t get married the first time that he proposed. Alex has been hurt by every woman he has ever loved and now he just sees Jo as a deceitful cheater.

Amelia is one of my favourite characters. She’s so messed up, which makes her so much more real than the other characters. I’m just so happy that she went ahead and married Owen. I want them to be happy together. They want the same things, which is what was missing from Owen and Cristina’s relationship, so I hope they go the distance. I did shed a tear when Amelia broke down saying that Derek was supposed to walk her down the aisle. I just hope her supposed ‘curse’ doesn’t come true. She mentioned earlier in the season that all the men she has ever loved have died and I hope that doesn’t come true for Owen (or any future sons she may have with him).

CATERINA SCORSONE, KEVIN MCKIDD

Arizona made my heart melt this week. Her olive branch to Callie was incredible and again, I cried. I didn’t expect Callie to leave. I thought she would wake up, smell the coffee and stay in Seattle and eventually rekindle her love with Arizona. I do like the way that Callie left and I like how there is still scope for Sara Ramirez to return after she has taken a break. The best case scenario for me would be that Callie returns because she realises she doesn’t love Penny and is in fact in love with Arizona and always will be.

I am overjoyed for April and Jackson. They have a baby! I really hope this is the beginning of them getting back together. Japril gives me life. April was incredibly strong to go through a C-section sans anesthesia and Ben was actually a life-saver. I actually want the baby to be called Warren April Jackson. ‘Warren’ because Ben saved both the baby and April’s lives, ‘April’ because she went through hell and back for her baby.

Predictions

Nothing is ever easy in Grey’s Anatomy, so I suspect that Amelia and Owen will come across some problems in their relationship. I’m not sure what. I don’t want it to be that Amelia becomes addicted to something again because that’s too predictable. I personally would love to see Megan Hunt make a stunning return, which would seriously affect Owen and Nathan too. Amelia would have to be the one to support her husband, showing strength like no other. Nathan would have to confront his demons. I don’t think he’d go back to Megan. If he did, it would be a temporary thing like Derek and Addison where they both realise that they aren’t the same people and aren’t compatible anymore.

Grey-Anatomy-Amelia-Owen-Wedding-Pictures

Meredith will probably tell Amelia that she hooked up with Nathan. I’m not sure if Amelia will in turn tell Owen, but if she does, I expect a stern warning from the man who, although there are signs of reconciliation, still blames Nathan for Megan’s supposed death. Amelia will be able to take the moral high-ground against Meredith for once. Maggie is going to end up being the person who is hurt at the end of all of this. Unfortunately, there are no real romantic prospects in her life and she’s making something out of nothing when it comes to Nathan.

April and Jackson will grow closer together as they co-parent their newborn baby. They may reconciliate and decide to bury the hatchet and move on as a couple. They might even get remarried.

Ben and Miranda have patched over the issues they had so I would love to see a season in which Ben passes his boards with flying colours and makes Chief Bailey proud in the process. I would love for Miranda to have more screen time because Chief Bailey rocks!

Alex won’t believe Jo if and when she decides to tell him the truth because he’s just been hurt too many times. When he loves someone, he gives them everything and right now, he feels like she’s thrown it back in his face. It will take time, but they will work things out. I expect that Alex will say he will protect Jo, she’ll file for a divorce and her soon to be ex-husband will make an appearance.

Other thoughts:

  • If Megan were to return, Alyson Hannigan would do a stellar job of portraying her.
  • Michael Ealy would be brilliant as Jo’s ex-husband, but so would Kevin Alejandro. We don’t know his age or ethnicity, but either of those actors would do a stellar job.

The Memo

I’ve decided that when I can’t write articles, I’ll write updates and they shall be listed as ‘The Memo’…I mean, you’ve got to get the memo, right?

I haven’t had time to write anything creative recently. I haven’t had much time at all. I just started a new job which I’m enjoying, but the hours are long so after my shift, I basically come home and go to bed. However, my body is finally adjusting to the hours so I should be able to write more on my days off.

The job is certainly intriguing. I’ve almost finished my training too. It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before! Exciting times.

Other than that, nothing else has been happening in my life. My love life is still terrible. I seem to get attention from all the kind of guys you really don’t want attention from. I’ll be writing another Dating and Dickpics as and when I get the chance. I actually started messaging someone who seemed promising, only for him to go into  full-on creep mode. Yes, I know I’m just teasing you with that information. Don’t worry. It won’t be long until I write up more D&D.

  • Recently, my days off have consisted of napping and Netflix i.e. heaven.
  • I need gym membership. Must sort that out in the next couple of weeks.
  • Diamonds aren’t this girl’s best friend; coffee is. Coffee has gotten me through so much. I love you, coffee.
  • I had a dream about Ramsay Bolton whilst I was napping the other day. Slightly disturbing, although I do love Iwan Rheon.
  • Grey’s Anatomy finished last week and now I have a figurative medical hole in my life. I’m tempted to write up my thoughts and such about the plots that they have introduced towards the end of the season and speculate what will happen next season.
  • I have about a million and one articles I need to write.
  • I really want to go out and do something. Any takers?

Dating and Dickpics: Episode 8

Welcome, one and all, to another episode of my tragic love life.

As some of you will know from a brief note in my last column, I went on a date with a really great guy. He’s intelligent, funny and pretty charming. He’s also pretty easy on the eyes, which is always a bonus (and if I’m being honest, a basic requirement). Things are going pretty well between us. We went on another date last week and we basically just chilled out and talked the whole time. We went back to his place after a while and talked for ages until I had to reluctantly make my way home if I had any chance at getting back at my house at a decent, civilised hour. He’s smooth as hell, I’ll tell you that now. He says some of the sweetest stuff. He’s got quite a lot of deadlines so things have cooled off a bit temporarily. I hope it’s just temporary. We seem to have a good time together and we flirt a lot too, so I hope it’s just my anxiety rearing its ugly head and he really does like me.

tumblr_n6mc5ejCzQ1qf7u7jo1_500

My anxiety always makes me doubt my pulling abilities

Other than that, I haven’t really entertained any dates from anyone else because the calibre of men is shocking. There’s no one decent. Case in point: the only reason I went on a date with the guy I’m sort of seeing (or pre-dating) is because he came up with a rather quirky way of asking me out and he’s not a douche. He’s a genuinely nice guy who isn’t after everything. But with most guys, they have an ulterior motive. Call it gut instinct because I’ve been a woman my whole life and have had to deal with a barrage of misogyny and sexism, but I just get certain vibes off certain guys. And when it comes to discerning whether or not someone is a creep, I’m rarely ever wrong.

6358476866414430641194553222_tumblr_ndyhoj0WY51u06ukzo2_500

My gut instinct is as good as Annalise Keating’s

This wouldn’t be Dating and Dickpics without my usual screenshots and naming and shaming of misogynistic males, so here are the spoils of my plunder, so to speak.

wtf

I don’t even know why anyone would think that this is an acceptable opening line to send anyone. Who has ever said, ‘he asked if I wanted a big black sugar daddy and I knew it was love’?!

bait

As you all know, feminism is a fundamental part of my life. I believe in feminism so much that I’ve even got the word permanently inked into my skin. I shout it from the rooftops and specify that before messaging me, guys should only bother if they identify as a feminist. So why does this asshole think he has a right to bait anyone out. He’s clearly so ignorant that he couldn’t even be bothered to look up the definition of ‘feminist’, which is someone who believes in the equality of all genders. This stuff is actually more infuriating than people who use cheesy lines or blatantly misogynistic slurs. This guy actually wanted to ‘moan’ about feminism to me. Safe to say I blocked his pathetic ass.

put

If you needed any more evidence that sexism is alive and kicking online, there you have it. I’m not being funny, but you have to actually meet up with whoever’s pussy you’re going to ‘murder’ and guess what? Being a misogynistic fuckwit means that’s never going to happen! If any murder needs to be done, it’s to you. A nice decapitation of the neck would do.

fuckedupfuckeduptwiceThe above to screenshots make me sick. This guy was seriously so fucked up and triggering. Alongside putting down that I am a feminist, I also ask guys who want kids not to bother contacting me. I always make it explicitly clear because now I’m in my 20s, I feel that anything I get into should be going somewhere and if a guy wants them, we’re not compatible at all. This guy took it to another level. He messaged me saying ‘we would make cute children if we were together’ but I didn’t take the bait. And he couldn’t take that for a hint and kept messaging me one word here or there. I finally snapped and the above is what he sent me. This is unbelievably triggering for me because he was not respecting my boundaries and was actually thinking that it was fine to think about a hypothetical situation would would be a complete violation of my body. After explaining to him how sick and twisted he was, his response was ‘lol relax’. How can I relax when you’ve basically kept insisting that getting me knocked up would be a perfect situation for you? How can anyone who is so child-phobic ‘relax’ after that? I have reported him to the website and I hope they permanently ban him.

notsorry

‘Sorry to be that guy’…well actually, you’re not. Because if you were, you wouldn’t have said it in the first place. What you’ve done is just the equivalent of online catcalling so #byefelipe.

Being a woman on the internet and trying to date and find love is fucking exhausting.

tumblr_inline_nhjv8aipUO1qbnjg0

When will the misogyny stop?!

In other news:

  • I got my hair re-coloured and restyled. It’s very Meredith from Grey’s Anatomy before season 12.
  • I’m applying for jobs like they’re going out of fashion.
  • I’m losing all hope in the male population at this rate. Their only potential beacon of light is this guy I’ve been on two dates with.
  • I don’t think ending up alone would be such a bad thing, given the sorry state of guys on dating websites.
tumblr_nkk159hXgO1sgwdmzo1_500

So done

Dating and Dickpics: Episode 7

Sometimes I wonder when exactly I will stop writing D&D. I don’t think it’s going to come to an end any time soon though; the dating pool is seriously shallow at the moment. It’s full of fuckboys and guys who just want to waste your time or completely ignore your stances on key things like politics, children, religion etc. I guess it just means more entertainment for my loyal readers!

As some of you know, I was dating a guy for a few weeks. We really hit it off. He was funny as hell and he was quite interesting. He had a mental health problem so I felt he could relate to me because of mine. I actually think it broke down a lot of barriers because we refused to judge one another and were careful not to say anything insensitive. It was all a bit of a whirlwind really. Things moved pretty fast but we were both alright with it. There was only one issue. He told me on the first date that he was absolutely fine with not having kids and understood and respected that I never wanted them.

tumblr_nbg2v76c2r1qbi37ro1_500

Basically…

But if I’ve learnt anything through my dating woes, it’s that men lie, especially when it comes to the topic of kids. If you bring it up on the first date, they say they’re down with not having kids…only to turn around later and say ‘I thought I could change your mind’. Sorry, but I love myself more than I will ever love any man and I’d lose all self-respect if I did a u-turn on something I have felt and believed in since I was a child myself.

Things were going well until we were messaging one night and we started discussing what our perfect partner would be like and obviously, the children thing came up. He then went away for a couple of hours and allowed his dad to completely influence his decision, saying that he couldn’t live with the potential possibility that he may never have kids. I actually tried to think of ways around it in which I didn’t have to compromise on not having children (from experiences within my own family and circle of friends, it’s easier to go from wanting them to not wanting them than vice-versa). But in the end, he wasn’t prepared to entertain anything I was bringing to the table. I don’t even think that the children thing would’ve broken us up, to be honest. He had no sense of direction and his priorities were all wrong whereas I’m very headstrong, so we would’ve gone our separate ways because of that.

tumblr_inline_mxmtirxF2w1rbgili

Bitchslap and move on

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing: another year without being able to celebrate it. Consistency is key, guys. 22 years and counting. Anyway, I’m planning on spoiling myself and reminding myself that I do have love in my life, irreplaceable love from my friends and my family which is ultimately the most important kind of love. But you know, a guy to snuggle up with would be nice. But I have a bottle of vodka to snuggle up with so it’s essentially the same thing.

tumblr_inline_nd77gtl9DI1so10o6

Let’s be honest, this is how we’re all spending Valentine’s Day

Now, for the usual roundup of dirtbags I encounter on the internet.

israel

Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch…this guy was genuinely prepared to move from Israel for me.

perv

So you think it’s perfectly acceptable to message a girl who is less than half your age? In what world is that okay? I felt so creeped on when I read this message, especially considering I wrote on my profile that if a guy is over 32, he needn’t bother messaging me.

gross2

I’ll never understand why some guys think it’s acceptable to just ask sexual questions on the internet. Would you go up to someone in the street and ask them when they last had sex? Believe it or not, the people behind their computer screens are real. They have feelings and they don’t like to be sexually harassed online.

fuckboy

Guys, when a lady’s profile says that she is looking for dating and something serious, do not then ask for casual sex. You’re asking a stranger for sex. That’s desperate. Has it ever worked? Who can honestly say that they met the love of their life on a dating website by asking them if they wanted sex?

picky

Apparently insulting a girl is the best way to get her. Calling me ‘picky’ is never going to work. So sorry that I have high standards. #sorrynotsorry

youre39bruv.jpg

Sometimes I wonder if people bother reading anything in my profile. You’re 39. You’re 17 years older than me. You were an adult when I was born. End of discussion.

girl

This is an entirely new technique that I was baffled by. Now, we all know I’m superficial. I’ve rejected people based on the way they look. I’m not particularly proud of it, but I don’t see the point in being with someone I don’t find physically attractive. When this girl messaged me, my first thought was ‘who the hell gets their friend to do the talking for them? And who thinks they’re going to get anywhere without a single picture of themselves?’ I couldn’t even respond to this one.

ewwww

Firstly, calling someone ‘sexy’ is not a good compliment. Secondly, I burst out laughing when I saw this and absolutely had to respond. I’ll give him credit, he did say ‘okay cool’ after I responded.

In other news:

  • I had a dream that Ed Sheeran was my boyfriend and I never wanted to wake up.
  • I went on a date at the weekend with a really great guy. He’s attractive, funny and really intelligent. Maybe my ice cold heart will melt with this one.
  • I’m buying myself a present for Valentine’s Day. Any excuse.
  • True love is basically Netflix, booze and snacks.

I woke up like this

#OscarsSoWhite

There has been much warranted controversy surrounding this year’s Oscars because of how whitewashed it is — not one actor of colour has been nominated for an Oscar. Many actors and fans alike have raised their disgust at this blatant oversight, but the problem runs much deeper than many realise. After expressing my opinion on Twitter and being met with white people who are up in arms at the cheekiness of me wanting more media representation of people of colour, I felt it only too necessary to write about this year’s controversy.

The problem with Hollywood lies in its casting. Roles are given to white actors over actors of colour in disproportionate ways. Some casting calls specify that only white actors need apply for the role.

Barely anyone practices colourblind casting, which is something that needs to be implemented across the board. Shonda Rhimes is infamous for colourblind casting and has some of the most racially diverse shows in the TV world. For example, the character Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy was scripted to be a blonde white woman. However, Rhimes’ policy of colourblind casting meant that the role went to the well-deserved Sandra Oh, who is Canadian-Korean.

The solution to Hollywood’s blatant discrimination lies largely in colourblind casting. If you give everyone an even playing field and ignore what their race is, more actors of colour would be cast because they are insanely talented and have had to go through a lot more to become successful, thus showing a depth of character that a white actor might not necessarily have.

Another issue with Hollywood is that movies that only have black actors, for example, are instantly seen as ‘black’ movies and are therefore not as publicised and praised. By categorising such films, Hollywood is saying ‘this film is only for black people, thus it has a limited audience and shouldn’t have as much attention as other films’. It’s funny how you never see an all-white film being dubbed as only having appeal to white people. White is classified as a ‘normal’ film that appeals to all races and all audiences. If this isn’t an obvious double standard, I don’t know what is.

I’m not saying that people should be given roles based solely on their race. That wouldn’t benefit anyone if the actor is undeserving of the role. However, I don’t believe enough actors of colour are being cast in big enough movies that could win Oscars. The roles that receive rave reviews are usually played by white actors. In an industry that can’t even pay actresses the same amount as their male opposites, it’s unsurprising that the industry is continuing a casual oppression of actors of colour. Until colourblind casting becomes a widespread way of doing things, I don’t see that the Oscars will become diverse anytime soon. You know there’s a problem when some of the biggest names in the industry are speaking out, including both black and non-black actors and actresses. I for one would like more diversity and representation in Hollywood. I want to see people on the big screen who look like me, people I can relate to.
